Hot Off The Press: Blog Volume 17

Posted on: Fri 24 Apr 2009

There was a certain fittingness to the fact that Wolves sealed promotion to the Premier League - and quite possibly the Championship title - on the date of April, 18, 2009.

Because it was exactly 50 years to the day since Wolves beat Luton 5-0 to effectively seal the First Division championship - the top flight as it was - thanks to a vastly superior goal difference over Manchester United.

United could still have caught Wolves on points, but having done the maths knew it would be impossible and thus Matt Busby dispatched a telegram to Molineux boss Stan Cullis congratulating him on his success and conceding the title was done and dusted.

Clearly that's not going to happen this time around, and a ten goal difference to Birmingham would not be insurmountable should Wolves lose both their final games and the Blues return with a maximum six point haul.

But there's no mistaking that Wolves will be wanting to make doubly sure that they pick up what - thanks to the arrival of the Premier League - will be the exact same silverware as lifted by Billy Wright half a century ago.

Those great pictures of Billy and company from the true glory days of Wolves' history still adorn various rooms of Molineux and are indeed prominent - and rightly so - at the Compton training ground.

And while in relative terms claiming the title from English football's second tier clearly cannot offer a comparison to the all-conquering team of the 1950's, the achievements of Mick McCarthy and his team which were signed, sealed and delivered at the weekend will rightly secure their own spot in Molineux history.

For such a young team to have led the table for all bar a few weeks of the usual fiercely competitive Championship season is an achievement which can never be under-estimated.

All the way through Mick and his young charges have probably been battling against something of an under-current that they wouldn't last the pace.

A feeling from other teams and supporters that - perhaps in reference to the last time they occupied the automatic promotion spots for any length of time back in 2002 - they would at some stage 'blow up' and be easily overhauled.

But that's a prospect that ultimately never quite materialized, not least because when Wolves suffered what was their only dip to a remarkable season in January and February, it was their nearest rivals who did the same and were thus unable to take advantage.

Even in losing at Birmingham a week today, there were suggestions that Wolves could struggle to cross the finishing line.

Instead they responded with two successive wins, setting up the potential dream scenario of Saturday in which Wolves just needed to win to secure their place in the Premier League.

Once again they delivered.

Little wonder then the wild scenes of celebration as the players were swamped in a mass of unbridled delight as supporters invaded the pitch to enjoy Wolves' first automatic promotion for 20 years.

Several of the excited Wolves players certainly looked like they'd taken something of a buffeting as they emerged down the tunnel having escaped the gleeful throng - but the whoops of delight were all the evidence needed that they didn't mind a jot.

The now familiar dressing room celebratory scenes were also tinged with some special moments.

The arrival of chairman Steve Morgan to share an embrace with boss Mick McCarthy - then too CEO Jez Moxey - and also Michael Kightly, who despite having had to miss the final throes of the season through injury was still carried away by the emotion as he hugged his delighted manager.

As the champagne corks popped George Elokobi took the opportunity to gain some modicum of revenge for the exertions of his intensive rehabilitation programme by chasing fitness coach Tony Daley around the dressing room, while amid the general atmosphere of hand-shakes and fist-pumps it was Mark Little who emerged as the bravest of them all.

We Are Premier League!

Litts, in his wisdom, decided to put his head above the parapet by spraying champagne over his manager in the pictures which have been viewed and enjoyed at regular intervals over the weekend.

"That's you on loan to Halifax next season," came the quip from the soaked manager.

There followed numerous interviews for the players with the media, several of which were interrupted by team-mates, while for Mick - after his initial television commitments - a quick sitdown in the dressing room to quietly reflect on a job incredibly well done.

He was then greeted by a round of applause and words of congratulation as he made his way into the media suite to face the written press, where his attempts to articulate what the day actually meant were also followed by the first discussions about just how tough the road ahead could be.

From there the management and playing squad went their separate ways for their own celebrations at various outposts across the region.

Today they are on a fully-deserved day off, but tomorrow they'll be back in, aiming to professionally finish the job not least as Saturday's opponents Barnsley are battling against relegation.

And in particular, aiming to mark Mick's latest return to his home-town with the point which would ensure that Championship trophy returns to the Molineux trophy cabinet after a half a century wait.
