Hot Off The Press: Blog Volume 13

Posted on: Sun 16 Nov 2008

Unlucky 13 is the number of this blog entry but Wolves' visit to Southampton on Saturday was far from unfortunate as the club registered what can almost be termed an historic win.

After all - not only was it their first win in six attempts at Southampton's St Mary's Stadium but the game also saw them finally notch their first goal there.

It had taken a grand total of 459 minutes to hit the onion bag at the Saints' impressive stadium, Chris Iwelumo doing the honours with a pinpoint header.

Then, just like buses, the second one pulled up almost immediately afterwards as just eight minutes later David Jones made it 2-0.

Taking The Dell into consideration as well Wolves had gone 17 games - home and away - without defeating Southampton, the most painful of those failures when Jason Euell snatched an injury time equaliser back at Molineux in March.

Some questionable refereeing decisions have played their part in the sequence whilst none of the 24,804 present at Molineux on March 31, 2007, will ever forget Wolves comprehensively outplaying Southampton - going on to lose 6-0 - and then departing the pitch to a standing ovation!

Prior to the weekend it's all the way back in 1980 that Wolves had previously outmarched the Saints when a brace from Andy Gray and a third from Norman Bell secured a 3-0 away success.

"Going Underground" by The Jam topped the charts, Margaret Thatcher wasn't even a year into her tenure as British Prime Minister and latest England recruit Michael Mancienne was a mere eight years from taking his first breath.

Just an idea into how much of a monkey Wolves had been carrying in their battles with Southampton.

Now though, after almost 30 years of hurt, the run is now over.

And here therefore is the roll of Saints dishonour which can now - at long last - be consigned to the history books!
