Kids Draw A Blank

Posted on: Tue 21 Apr 2009

The Academy under 18s shared the points with Barnsley when the teams met at Compton Park on Saturday.

Neither side could make the breakthrough and Wanderers coach John Perkins admitted that his side lacked a cutting edge in front of goal.

He said: "It was a low key game but I couldn't fault the players for their efforts, their commitment and their attitude.

"Our biggest fault was that we lacked that bit of quality in the last third. We had several good chances including when Kyle Bennett shot over from near the penalty spot in the first half, and Ashley Hemmings ran through and hit the post after the interval.

"We had Daniel East, a schoolboy, making his debut at under 18 level in goal and it was nice that he kept a clean sheet, and Danny Batth and Ethan Ebanks-Landell were magnificent at the heart of the defence.

"Overall I felt that we were the better side and were well on top but we couldn't get that elusive goal. We should have won and we should have won comfortably."

The under 18s are away at Derby this coming weekend before winding up the campaign with home games against Nottingham Forest (2 May) and Manchester City (9 May).
