Hemmings Brace Puts Paid To Blades

Posted on: Mon 17 Mar 2008

Two goals from Ashley Hemmings gave the Wolves' Academy under 18s a 2-0 victory over Sheffield United when the sides met at Compton park at the weekend.

The home team was one of the youngest ever fielded by the club for an under 18s game with nine of the players first year apprentices and just two from the second year.

United started strongly with David Davis and Scott Malone getting in blocks to on target efforts and keeper Billy Lumley producing two fine saves.

After weathering the early storm John Perkins' men started to impose themselves on the game and they took the lead in the 15th minute when Hemmings fired home from 10-yards after good work from Michael Wardle and Kyle Bennett.

Ten minutes later the young striker struck again - this time with an angled shot from inside the box - with Bennett again involved in the build-up.

Wolves remained on top for the remainder of the half and continued to do so following the resumption.

James Davis was just off target after he had been put through by Wardle, and David Davis headed wide after connecting with Alex Melbourne's centre.

Hemmings missed out on a hat-trick when he drove narrowly wide after Bennett had set up the opportunity.

Coach John Perkins said: "It was a good performance overall and, in patches, there was some extremely good football played by a very young side."
