No Goals But A Deserved Point

Posted on: Mon 11 Feb 2008

The Wolves Academy under 18s earned a thoroughly deserved point from a goalless draw with high flying Everton on Merseyside at the weekend.

But a lack of goals didn't mean there was a lack of entertainment with both teams creating several chances and both keepers in fine form.

Tom Spalding's dangerous cross was headed narrowly wide by Ashley Hemmings who also went close when his shot just beat the upright after a run through the heart of the Everton defence.

Spalding, on the right flank, and Scott Malone on the left, continued to test the home rearguard with a succession of crosses whilst Billy Lumley (pictured) in the Wolves goal made two excellent saves when Everton's strikers broke through.

The second half, like the first, was an open affair although it took more heroics from Lumley in the closing stages to ensure Wolves of the draw when he made two point blank saves.

Coach John Perkins said: "The only real surprise to me was that there were no goals in the game considering there were so many chances.

"Both sides played well and a draw was a very fair result. Everton are one of the top sides in the League and I thought that we performed very well against them."
