Missed Chances Prove Costly
Wolves 1 (Winnall-pen 70) Crewe Alexandra 2
After dominating for much of the game, the Wolves under 18s were made to pay for a string of missed chances as Crewe took the spoils with two late goals at Compton Park. The visitors' goals came after Sam Winnall had converted a penalty for Wanderers.
In an opening 45 minutes, during which Wolves enjoyed virtually all of the attacking play, Ashley Hemmings hit the bar after he had been played in by Kyle Bennett, and the Crewe keeper made a fine save from Winnall after some excellent build up play involving Alex Melbourne and David Ijaha.
Hemmings was narrowly wide with a header, as was Winnall (pictured), who connected with a Scott Malone centre. It was Malone's first game for three months following surgery to repair a hernia.
Crewe came into the game a little more after the interval but Wolves were still the more dominant side and they finally made the breakthrough in the 70th minute when Winnall converted a spot kick after a handling offence following a corner.
In the 81st minute Crewe pulled level after a defensive error but, despite the setback, Wolves went straight back on the attack in search of a winning goal.
However, in the final minute, the visitors broke from defence and took advantage of some slack work from the home rearguard to snatch what was an unlikely winner.
Coach John Perkins said: "We created lots of chances and really, we should have been out of sight by half-time.
"After finally breaking through thanks to the penalty, bad defensive work in the last ten minutes cost us two goals and we ended up losing a game that we should have won comfortably."
