Penalty Winner

Posted on: Mon 17 Sep 2007

The Wolves' Academy under 18s won their first game of the season thanks to a David Ijaha penalty at Leeds.

It was a win that coach John Perkins felt was overdue given the performances of his team in recent weeks.

"I've said all along that we haven't been playing badly and that things haven't really been going our way results-wise," he said.

"It was a good team performance on Saturday and we deserved the three points.

"We were on top for much of the first-half. Scott Malone had a header cleared off the line and David Davis and Kyle Bennett both had good shots well saved by the Leeds keeper.

"Our goal came nine minutes after the break when Kyle Bennett was fouled in the box and David Ijaha scored from the spot.

"Leeds then came at us for a 20 minute spell but Tom Spalding and Danny Batth were both excellent in defence and Billy Lumley made three or four good saves in goal.

"Then we had a chance of making sure when Sam Winnall broke through but his shot went narrowly wide.

"We coped well as Leeds tried to get back on level terms in the final minutes, and held out for the win which, as I've said, was fully deserved."
