Last Kick Blow

Posted on: Sun 23 Sep 2007

Sunderland Youth 1  Wolves Youth 0

The long journey to Sunderland proved to be a fruitless one for the Academy under 18s who conceded the only goal with what was the last kick of the game.

It was a defeat that coach John Perkins felt was thoroughly undeserved.

He said: "It was a long day. We left Wolverhampton at 7.30am and it was after eight when we got back

"And, to lose in the manner we did made it all the more frustrating.

"It was a close match with not much between the teams all through. Sunderland started strongly but we settled down after 15 minutes and went close through Kyle Bennett who had been put through by David Davis.

"After the break Kyle took a free-kick that went to David Ijaha and his shot hit the post.

"The two David's - Ijaha and Davis - got stronger and stronger in midfield and Tom Spalding and Danny Batth were both excellent in defence.

"Five minutes from the end Sam Winnall shot over from a good position before Sunderland won a corner deep into stoppage time.

"Unfortunately we couldn't get it clear and, after a goalmouth scramble, they scored with a shot that took a hefty deflection. There wasn't even time to restart the game.

"Considering the long journey and that a lot of the players had been involved in the mid-week reserve game, I felt we did really well in what was a demanding game although we do need to start putting away our chances."
