City Win Keenly Contested Game
Bristol City Youth 2 Wolves Youth 1
Wolves Academy Under 18s just lost out in a keenly contested game at Bristol City on Saturday.
But coach John Perkins wasn't displeased with the performance of his young charges who, he says, were up against a more experienced team.
"We fielded two schoolboys, seven first years and just two second years against an older City side," explained John.
"We started fairly well and Kyle Bennett was wide with an early chance.
"In defence Scott Malone, normally a full-back, was exceptional filling in at centre half because of injuries, and David Davis and Mark Wardle also did well playing in unaccustomed roles.
"City took the lead shortly before the break with a long-range shot but it didn't take us long to get back onto level terms.
"Sam Winnall took the ball out of defence and found Kyle Bennett whose shot hit a defender and rebounded to David Ijaha who converted from six yards out.
"There was nothing in it after the break although it didn't help when we lost Scott (Malone) through injury.
"Bristol moved ahead midway through the half after a quickly taken free-kick led to scramble in our area and eventually one of their players forced the ball home.
"Looking back at the game, we were beaten by the power and strength of an older team although I was pleased with the technical ability we displayed."
