Zubar nets in City draw.

Manchester City 1 (Sinclair-pen 82)

Wolves 1 (Zubar 72)

A late penalty from Scott Sinclair meant that Wolves had to share the spoils with Manchester City after Ronald Zubar had headed the Molineux reserves into the lead at the Etihad Stadium.

The first shot of the game came from City’s Lucas Scapuzzi but Dorus De Vries had little trouble in fielding the Italian’s low shot.

In the ninth minute Zeli Ismail went down as he ran into the area along the byline under a challenge from Jeremy Helan, but the referee was right up with play and he immediately turned down the penalty appeals.

City striker Alex Nimley almost made the breakthrough in the 17th minute with a diving header that was inches wide after a good cross from Helan.

Ronald Zubar hustled Scott Sinclair off the ball and shepherded it out of play as the winger threatened to break through the middle then, when play swept to the other end, Frank Nouble’s low cross was cut out by

City keeper Eirik Johansen.

Jordan Cranston drilled a 20-yard free-kick through the City wall forcing a diving stop from Johansen, before De Vries pulled off a brilliant save to deny Scapuzzi who had taken a return pass from Nimley as he ran into the Wolves area.

In the 39th minute Ismail ran onto Michael Ihiekwe’s flick but with only Johansen to beat he fired into the side netting.

Half-time: City 0 Wolves 0

There was plenty of effort from both sides in the opening stages of the second half although neither keeper had a direct save to make as play swung from end to end.

A low cross from Nouble was hacked clear from a crowded goalmouth and then, on the hour, a brilliant challenge from Ihiekwe took the ball away from Sinclair who looked odds on to score as he closed down on Scapuzzi’s centre.

Nimley blazed a shot over the bar from a good position as did Emyr Huws when Denis Suarez pulled the ball back into his path.

In the 69th minute Sinclair fouled Bjorn Sigurdarson in the ‘D’ and when Cranston touched the free-kick to Ismail he fired through the wall and just the wrong side of the post.

Wolves won four corners in succession and from the last of them, they moved into a 72nd minute lead. Ismail planted the kick into the six-yard box and Zubar, with a glancing header, found the net.

But City levelled ten minutes later after Cranston fouled Denis Suarez who had cut into the box. Suarez was unable to continue and as he received treatment, Sinclair thumped home the penalty.

In the closing stages, Dave Edwards' clearance finished just past his own post and substitute Jose Angle Pozo fired into the side netting with a shot on the turn. But Wolves were well worth their point, and continued the impressive start to the campaign which has seen them taking 11 from their first six games and suffering only one defeat.
