Southampton 2 (Sinclair 18, 33)
It proved to be a fruitless journey for the Wolves under 21s as they went down 2-0 to Southampton at Eastleigh’s Silverlake Stadium with home striker Jake Sinclair bagging a first-half brace.
There was little to separate the teams in the opening stages before, with their first attack of note, Southampton moved into an 18th minute lead. Dominic Gape slid the ball into the visitors box and Sinclair ran in to convert from close range.
Lloyd Isgrove almost made it two four minutes later but Aljaz Cotman got down well to hold on to the striker’s cross-shot.
Paulo Gazzaniga made a comfortable save from David Moli’s shot and then the keeper saved from Robbie Parry after a scramble in the home box.
In the 33st minute, Saints went two up with Sinclair getting his second of the night with a confident finish following a methodical build up involving Matt Targett and Corby Moore.
Five minutes later Sam Winnall let go a fierce cross-shot that forced a fine diving save from Gazzaniga who tipped the ball over the bar.
Half-Time: Saints 2 Wolves 0
Neither keeper was troubled in the 15 minutes that followed the break and, when a chance finally appeared, it fell to Winnall who fired well over the bar.
After Lee Evans had driven narrowly wide, it was Winnall again that threatened the Southampton goal in the 72nd minute. The striker was played through by Robbie Parry but Gazzaniga pulled off another superb diving save to deny the Wolves man.
It wasn’t until ten minutes from time that Cotman’s goal was threatened again with substitute Sam McQueen just failing to get his head to Targett’s centre..
Then, in the final minute, Isgrove was unlucky as his shot on the turn smacked against the foot of the post and bounced back into the arms of Cotman.
