Southampton 3 (Targett 23, Sinclair-pen 38, Cranston-og 62)
A below par performance from the Wolves under 21s ended with a 3-0 reversal at the hands of Southampton when the teams met at the Saints’ Staplewood training ground on Friday afternoon.
Kristian Kostrna went close for the Molineux men with a 20-yard drive that flashed narrowly wide in the eighth minute but that was the only real chance of note for the visitors in the opening half.
A foul by Jamie Tank on Jake Sinclair led to Southampton taking the lead in the 23rd minute. The free-kick was from a central position 20-yards out and it was curled home by Matt Targett.
Matt Young shot over the bar after Sam Gallagher had cut the ball back but things took another turn for the worse after 38 minutes when Kourtney Hause felled Jake Flannigan in the box. Jake Sinclair sent Jon Flatt the wrong way from the spot.
Just before the half-time whistle, Harrison Reed almost made it a hat-trick of dead ball goals when he hit a free-kick that was no more than a foot wide.
Half-Time: Saints 2 Wolves 0
Jim Kellerman almost reduced the deficit with a header that flew wide three minutes after the restart but Southampton soon regained the upper hand.
And with the game in its 62nd minute the contest was as good as over when Jordan Cranston turned a Sinclair cross into his own net.
Sam McQueen nearly made it four with a header that just cleared the bar after a cross from Omar Rowe.
Hause had a header cleared off the line and Dominic Iorfa was also close to beating Saints keeper Cody Cropper before Flatt made a good save from Dominic Gape and Jordan Turnbull fired into the side netting as the side team flexed its muscles once more.
