Wolves 2 (Tank 42, Forde 90+1)
Late goals in each half, from Jamie Tank and Anthony Forde respectively, meant that the Wolves under 21s long haul to the north east to face Middlesbrough proved to be a profitable one.
The game was played at Hartlepool’s Victoria Park and it was the visitors that made the early running with Portuguese youngster Eusabio Bancessi giving the Boro defence the run around on his debut with some dazzling wing play.
Eusabio was part of a move, involving Forde, that ended with home keeper Luke Coddington saving well from Jim Kellerman.
Kellerman then headed narrowly wide from a Forde cross before Forde hit a free-kick into the Middlesbrough wall after Seb Hines had fouled Kellerman.
Flatt saved a first time effort from Jordan Jones but it was Wolves that moved into the lead after 42 minutes as Tank connected with Forde’s corner to power a header past Coddington from just six-yards out.
Half-Time: Boro 0 Wolves 1
Lewis Sirrell shot wide from the edge of the box with the first attempt of the new half and then a Forde cross was half cleared to Jordan Cranston whose well struck drive from 20-yards bounced back off the post.
Wolves piled on the pressure on the home defence and both Kellerman and Liam McAlinden went close to adding to their side’s score.
Bradley Fewster was off target with a shot from an acute angle in a rare Boro attack, but Flatt had little to do as the best the home forwards could manage was the occasional off target long range shot as Tank and Michael Ihiekwe kept a firm grip on proceedings.
The three points rarely looked to be in any danger but, in the first minute of stoppage time, Forde capped a fine individual display by wrapping things up with a superb curling effort from just outside the area that nestled in the of corner of Coddington’s goal.
