Ten Men Wolves Take A Point

United held after Ismail dismissal.

Manchester United 0

Wolves 0

Reduced to ten men after as many minutes following the sending-off of Zeli Ismail, Steve Weaver’s under 21s fought valiantly to take a fully deserved point from a Manchester United side that included Anderson, Nick Powell, Alexander Buttner and Chris Smalling from the Old Trafford senior squad.

The first chance of the game fell to Ismail who tried his luck from 20-yards and didn’t clear the bar by much. Then he went on a run down the right flank and outstripped his marker before hitting a low cross that just eluded Liam McAlinden.

But things quickly turned sour for the youngster who was shown a straight red card in the 10th minute after he caught Smalling with a late challenge.

Despite being a man down Wolves still pushed United back and home keeper Sam Johnstone had  to punch clear a free-kick from Anthony Forde.

But United missed a gilt edged chance in the 25th minute when Powell sidefooted wide from a good position after a cross from Buttner.

Jack Price then forced a full length save from Johnstone after he connected with a low cross from Forde,

Openings on the rock hard service were few and far between but it took a timely intervention from Jamie Tank to thwart Larnell Cole who was through on goal.

In first-half stoppage time Anderson missed a glorious chance for United when he fired wide from inside the box after he had been set up by Powell.

Half-Time: United 0 Wolves 0

United had the best of the few attempts at goal after the break with Powell firing wide after he connected with Frederic Veseli’s low cross and Lingard shooting over the bar after a precision pass from Buttner.

On the hour mark, Powell was wide with a long distance effort before the home side made a change replacing Adnan Januzaj with Tom Lawrence.

Price almost gave the visitors the lead after he took a return pass from Forde but the skipper was just too high with his shot from the edge of the box.

Midway through the half Wolves had a justifiable penalty appeal rejected after Buttner’s challenge on Forde.

McAlinden just failed to get a head to the ball after a good run and cross from Jordan Cranston before Cole squandered a late chance when he was wide of the target after playing a one-two with Jesse Lingard.

But there was to be no denying the ten men who deserve full credit for their efforts against the odds on the difficult surface.
