Manchester United 3 (Wilson 49, 79, 84)
Wolves under 21s lost out to Manchester United beneath the Molineux floodlights with Reds’ striker James Wilson helping himself to a second half hat-trick.
There was plenty of effort in the opening minutes from both sides but little in the way of goalmouth action. It was in the tenth minute that the first chance fell to United’s Andreas Pereira who missed a sitter when he fired wide of an open goal after Ben Pearson had delivered a low cross.
Robbie Parry’s enterprising run through the heart of the visitors defence was halted when he was clearly obstructed by Paddy McNair right on the 18-yard line. It was a clear foul and yet, amazingly, the referee waved play on.
Jonathan Flatt had to drag away an inswinging Pereira corner from under the cross bar and then the United man got the better of Jamie Tank and Dominic Iorfa with some neat footwork before shooting wide of the far post.
Three minutes before the break Flatt produced a brilliant reflex save to thwart Wilson who, from just six yards out, made a good connection with Saidy Janko’s cross only for the keeper to somehow block a shot that had ‘goal’ written all over it.
In stoppage time Joe Rothwell tried his luck from just outside the area but his effort was a foot too high.
Half-Time: Wolves 0 United 0
A long through ball from Kristian Kostrna picked out Bradley Reid and he sprinted forwards before hitting a shot from the right of the area that drew a good save from Ben Amos.
But, in the 48th minute Wilson hit the first of his treble - a low drive from 20 yards that flew into the far corner of the net.
There was a chance for Wolves to level matters after Parry had been fouled outside the United box. Anthony Forde’s free-kick hit the defensive wall and when the winger latched onto the rebound his second attempt got through but was saved by Amos.
Parry had a low shot taken by the keeper who then plucked a speculative 30 yard volley from Jamie O’Hara out of the air.
Rothwell took the ball from the halfway line to the edge of the Wolves box before shooting straight at Flatt before Wilson struck again in the 79th minute as he steered the ball past the keeper from near the penalty spot.
Just five minutes later he completed his hat-trick, lashing the ball past the helpless Flatt from close range after Janko had pulled the ball back into his path.
