Bolton 2 (Iliev 52, Clough 77)
Wolves 3 (Forde 27, Bancessi 29, Reid 71)
Wolves came out on top of an entertaining Under 21s encounter with Bolton when the teams met at the Lancashire FA’s headquarters at Leyland on Monday evening.
Conor Wilkinson fired over the bar in an early Trotters attack whilst Sam Whittall was wide at the other end after he met a cross from Jamie O’Hara.
Whittall then missed a good chance when he shot over and it was Whittall that featured again in Wolves’ next attack but the midfielder’s shot struck a defender and bounced to Anthony Forde who was wide with the follow up.
A cross from Georg Iliev flew dangerously across the face of Jon Flatt’s goal but it was Wolves that made the breakthrough on 27 minutes when Forde picked the ball up on the left and cut inside before unleashing a low shot from 22-yards that curled away from Bolton keeper Arran Lee-Barrett and found the far corner of the net.
Two minutes later, Eusebio Bancessi doubled Wolves lead and he ran into the box and beat a defender before lashing home an angled effort.
Whittall and Forde both went close to adding a third before, just on the break, another threatening Iliev cross eluded Clough and Wilkinson.
Half-Time: Bolton 0 Wolves 2
Five minutes after the restart Zach Clough had the chance of reducing the deficit for the home side but he put the ball over the bar.
Bolton did pull one back, however, in the 52nd minute as Iliev latched onto a long through ball and ran from just inside the Wolves half before squeezing the ball past Flatt from a tight angle.
Flatt made a good save from Chris Lester as the home team went in search of an equaliser but it was Wolves that struck next, in the 71st minute when Whittall set up the chance for substitute Bradley Reid to shoot past Lee-Barrett.
With 77 minutes gone, Flatt could only parry a driven cross-shot from Aaron Knight and Clough was there to stoop and nod the ball over the line from close quarters.
In the dying minutes Clough connected with a cross from Iliev but his header went over the bar and Wolves held on to claim the three points.
