Wolves’ Development Squad will kick off their Barclays Under-21 Premier League Cup campaign tonight when they take on Notts County at Meadow Lane (7pm).
The cup is a new competition set up alongside the Barclays Under-21 League, in which Wolves, as a Category One club, operate in the top division.
Notts County, coached by former England winger Steve Hodge, have already beaten Doncaster and Coventry in the qualifying rounds of the competition ahead of tonight’s last 32 clash.
Wolves Development Coach Steve Weaver expects a tough test in store but believes it will be more good experience for the club’s crop of youngsters.
“It is a different competition for the lads – a one-off on the night,” he said.
“It’s something that the Premier League have introduced and it brings all the categories together.
“A bit like the FA Cup it might end up with say a League One or League Two club playing against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium and I think that is to be applauded.
“It is a good idea and another good experience for the lads to play in a cup competition.
“We want to win tonight, and it’s not like a league game where maybe if it’s a draw with a few minutes to go you take a point – you want to go out and win it.
“It will be good to play on the Meadow Lane pitch where the first team lads played at the weekend as well.
“We are taking over a young side and are looking forward to the game and giving it a go.”
Admission tonight is £3 for adults and £1 concessions at the Derek Pavis Turnstiles.
