A young Wolves development side fell to a narrow defeat when they met Burton Albion in a behind closed doors friendly at Compton Park today.
Only two of the squad, goalkeeper Aaron McCarey
and Welsh midfielder Lee Evans had any senior experience at Molineux.
Coach Steve Weaver said: “The majority of our team will form the basis of next season’s under 21 squad. Burton, on the other hand, included several players with senior experience and that turned out to be the difference between the teams today – that little bit of know how.
“We started poorly and conceded an early goal which was scored by Rene Howe, a well-travelled professional.
“But credit to our lads who battled their way back into it and they deserved the equaliser we got when Sam Whittall (pictured) scored with a volley after the ball had been knocked down to him.
“We lost Eusebio after 20 minutes with a neck injury, and had Bradley Reid and Albert Torres getting some football under their belts at last.
“The second half was a very even affair and I thought it was going to end all square until we got caught out by a long ball over the top which Howe ran onto and finished.
“We pinned Burton back for the final ten minutes but couldn’t find a way through.
“I never like losing – even if it’s a friendly game. But I can take satisfaction from what was a really useful workout and I’m grateful to Burton for sending a side over.”
