Newcastle United 3 (Gillesphey 40, Armstrong 45, Gosling 90+2)

Wolves 1 (Antelmi 20)

The long haul to the north east proved to be a fruitless one for the Wolves under 21s who went down to a 3-1 defeat against Newcastle – this after having taken the lead through Australian trialist Patrick Antelmi.

Wanderers keeper Jon Flatt was soon called into action as he tipped over a fierce effort from Haris Vuckic. The Slovenian was soon in the thick of things again with a deflected effort that went straight to Flatt.

Dan Gosling had a goalbound shot blocked before, at the other end, Jamie O'Hara's powerful strike was tipped around the post by Jak Alnwick. But the keeper’s efforts were in vain as, from Anthony Forde’s 20th minute corner, Georg Margreitter flicked the ball on and Antelmi was there to force it home from close quarters.

Alex Gilliead saw a 31st minute effort deflected wide then Gael Bigirimana fired narrowly the wrong side of the post as Newcastle looked to hit back. Jamie Tank threw himself in the way of Gosling's shot then Margreitter blocked Curtis Good's strike.

The pressure told six minutes before the break when MaCauley Gillesphey showed some neat control before slotting a shot beyond the reach of Flatt.

Worse was to follow for Wolves after a close call when Vuckic cut inside and unleashed a stunning shot from 30 yards that bounced back off the bar. But, in stoppage time, Adam Armstrong raced onto Kevin Mbabu's pass to slide the ball home and put his side in front.

Newcastle continued to press after the restart and Vuckic's strong run ended in a shot which flashed just past the far post.

Vuckic was replaced by Steven Logan shortly afterwards and the substitute was soon in the thick of things with an effort that was deflected narrowly wide.

Just past the hour mark, Alnwick made a fine save with his feet to deny David Moli who had come on for Tim Jakobsson.

In the 87th minute, Flatt was called into action again as he turned the ball away after Tom Heardman had cut inside and struck a low drive on a pitch that was becoming testing with the heavy rain that had fallen on it.

In the second minute of stoppage time,  Gosling wrapped things up for the Geordies. Jonathyn Quinn's pass was touched on by Heardman for Gosling to tuck the ball into the visitors net.
