Wolverhampton team on song at Upton Park

A Wolverhampton football team have been celebrating a season of unprecedented success after victory in the Asian Community Cup Final at West Ham’s Upton Park clinched a trophy treble.

Punjab United Sports, who have links to the Punjabi Wolves Supporters Club, have claimed the Wolverhampton and District Sunday League Division One title, Birmingham Sunday Vase, and then topped it all off with the UK Asian Community Cup at West Ham.

Gulraj Kular takes up the story.....

The league was won at a canter. Despite a disrupted fixture list due to the weather, Punjab won all 16 of their games to ensure promotion and the trophy was theirs. Performances from the likes of David Meese, Curtis Tilt and Kristian Green meant that all opposition were swept away by the footballing juggernaut that was Punjab United. Gurjit Singh led the goalscoring charts with 35, as the the boys found the net 71 times overall. United also made it to the GA Evans Cup Semi Final, losing to Premier Division side Diffusion on penalties, whilst Premier Division winners Bentley stood in their way from progress to a Charity Cup Semi Final.

The Birmingham Sunday Vase Final was a great chance to show off the club’s credentials in front of the Birmingham FA, and the side didn’t disappoint against Castle Vale. Gurpal Mandair opened the scoring before going off injured. His replacement, Jaspal Bhandal, ensured he wasn’t missed too much by grabbing the two goals required for victory.

The icing on a rather wholesome cake came in East London, where a coachload of fans followed the players down to The Boleyn Ground to roar the team on to victory over Bury Park Saracens. Punjab took the lead through the prolific Gurjit Singh, but they were pegged back to 1-1 soon after. Hardip Shorcora restored Punjab’s lead, but Saracens equalised once more. Enter Razwan Akhtar, to rise from the subs bench, score the winner and send the Punjab fans into raptures.

Next season promises just as much, with the club battling on five fronts. Could the quintuple be on?
