Chelsea (Cahill 4, Bertrand 7, Mata 17, Romeu-pen 52, Torres 58, Moses 71)
A much changed Wolves side was put to the sword at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea rattled in six goals without reply to end this season’s interest in the Capital One Cup for the Molineux men.
Just one member of the team that started against Peterborough, Slawomir Peszko, retained his place for the cup tie.
Chelsea kicked off attacking the end of the ground that housed a thousand visiting supporters and the Londoners piled the pressure on from the start with Dorus De Vries having to punch clear a cross from Ryan Bertrand’s and then dive at the feet of Lucas Piazon.
But Ronald Zubar’s foul on Victor Moses to the right of the Wolves box led to Chelsea taking a third minute lead. Juan Mata took the free kick and Gary Cahill headed home at the far post although he appeared to foul Richard Stearman in getting to the ball.
Worse followed four minutes later after De Vries had made a good save in turning aside Oriol Romeu’s 25 yard ground shot. Piazon took possession on the bye-line and pulled the ball back for Ryan Bertrand to ram it home from 12 yards out.
Stearman had to hook clear from Piazon as the two vied for contention of a deep cross at the far post before Wolves finally had some temporary respite when they were awarded a free kick near the left hand corner flag. Razak Boukari took the kick and although Zubar got a head to the ball it was then cleared.
Chelsea went three up in the 17th minute when Mata played a one-two with Fernando Torres before burying a low shot past the helpless De Vries.
Seconds after the restart, the Dutch keeper had to boot clear from Piazon before Wolves’ almost reduced the deficit with a rising drive from David Davis that home keeper Ross Turnbull just got his fingertips to.
Peszko had a golden chance of opening his Wolves account in the 25th minute as he raced clear through the middle and skipped past Turnbull but then fired into the side netting from an acute angle.
Chelsea were soon back on the attack and a low cross from Ramires hit Georg Margreitter and bounced across the face of goal before being cleared by Danny Batth.
Piazon appeared to throw himself at Batth to earn a foul on the edge of the area and Mata’s free kick skimmed the side netting as it flew wide.
A cross shot from Torres went across the face of goal and out for throw on the far side and after Zubar had pulled back Cesar Azpilicueta in a position similar to the one that led to the opening goal, Mata’s free kick was cleared for a corner this time, however.
The half finished with yet another Mata free kick, this time after Peszko’s foul on Ramires, and again the Spanish midfielder was inches off target with his effort.
Half-Time: Chelsea 3 Wolves 0
Anthony Forde was an interval replacement for Stephen Hunt and his 50th minute free kick had to be punched clear by Turnbull.
Chelsea went four up in the 52nd minute after an awful decision. Moses fell as he chased the ball into the box before he made contact with De Vries. But the referee pointed to the spot and Romeu sent the keeper the wrong way with the kick.
Peszko had another chance to score after Boukari had pulled the ball back to him but the Pole put his shot the wrong side of the post.
In the 58th minute Torres bulleted home a near post header following Mata’s corner for Chelsea’s fifth.
Both sides then made a change with Oscar replacing Ramires for Chelsea and Frank Nouble coming on against his former club in place of Boukari.
The agony for Wolves continued as Moses headed number six past De Vries after a cross from Oscar.
The keeper did well to save with his legs after substitute Marko Marin had played Torres clean through and, for Wolves, Forde and Nouble both had shots blocked in quick succession before the home defence scrambled the ball away.
Zeli Ismail made his senior debut for Wanderers when he came on in place of Peszko for the final seven minutes.
