Griffiths to benefit from Scotland duty

Leigh Griffiths is relishing the chance of turning out for Scotland against England at Wembley having been named in the squad for next month’s friendly.

The Wolves striker, who made his first senior international start in the excellent 1-0 win in Croatia last month, is included in Gordon Strachan’s squad for the fixture on August 14.

“When I came in from training yesterday there were already ten messages on my phone congratulating me,” says Griffiths.

“I was absolutely delighted to hear I was in the squad and can’t wait to get to Wembley to play against the Auld Enemy!

“I started the last game in Croatia when we won and hopefully the manager will keep faith in me for this one and I can play a part against England.

“It’s always a special fixture and the last time we played at Wembley was in 1999 and we won that one so hopefully we can do well again this time.”

And Head Coach Kenny Jackett believes it can only be of benefit to Griffiths – and indeed other members of the Wolves squad – to pick up international experience whatever the level.

“It’s good news for Leigh,” said Jackett.

“He is very much focused on doing well for Wolves first and foremost and has said that publically.

“Also, having just made his Scotland debut in early June against Croatia, he’s now got the England game coming up at Wembley and two qualifiers coming up after that in September.

“It is a fantastic thing to go for.

“If he has the goals of doing well for Wolves and then on the back of that doing well at international level I then see a motivated player.

“And if you see a motivated player with ability you are starting to get somewhere near what  you want.

“At present I do see somebody who is motivated to do well at Wolves knowing that the Wolves form and success can reflect in an international career for Scotland.

“It can help to go and meet up and be around players of that calibre.

“These are exciting times for him for both club and country and I am pleased for him.

“He had a very successful year last year and has come back here and made a very good impression so far.

“He just really has to go and back that up in the league games now when we will really need him.”
