Overpowered By Merseysiders

Wolves 0

Liverpool 3 (Carroll 52, Bellamy 61, Kuyt 78)

Wolves were overpowered at Molineux by a Liverpool side that rattled in three goals without reply after the interval following an evenly fought out opening 45 minutes.

Eggert Jonsson came in for the suspended Karl Henry in an otherwise unchanged starting line-up.

Wolves kicked-off attacking the North Bank end but Liverpool went close to taking a third minute lead when Andy Carroll nodded down a Craig Bellamy cross to Dirk Kuyt. Pressurised by Roger Johnson and Wayne Hennessey, the Dutch striker couldn't get a proper shot in and from close range the ball dribbled inches wide of the post.

Christophe Berra won an important challenge on the edge of the area to halt Glen Johnson's run on goal as Liverpool enjoyed the best of the early exchanges.

Wolves' first serious attempt was almost rewarded with a goal as Dave Edwards swung a foot at Michael Kightly's cross forcing a fine save from Pepe Reina.

Charlie Adam went into the book for a crude challenge from behind on Matt Jarvis. Kightly took the free-kick but Edwards was too high with his header.

Bellamy was then presented with a good chance as he sprinted onto a long through ball. Kevin Foley raced across to challenge as Hennessey advanced and Bellamy prodded the ball wide from 20-yards out.

Moments later Hennessey dived full length to keep out a swerving effort from his international team-mate and then, from a Bellamy corner, he cleared Daniel Agger's header with his foot just as the ball was about to cross the line.

Bellamy was featuring heavily and his next involvement saw him yellow carded after he had illegally halted Steven Fletcher's run along the right flank.

Fletcher landed a header on the roof of the net after a Kightly corner before Wolves survived a justifiable penalty appeal after Emmanuel Frimpong had appeared to push Adam in the area. Shortly afterwards Hennessey clutched a Bellamy free-kick in mid-air.

Five minutes before the break Wanderers were literally inches away from taking the lead. Kightly took a return pass from Fletcher and hit low shot that curled just the wrong side of the woodwork.

In stoppage time, Hennessey got down low to save a shot from Jordan Henderson.

Half-Time: Wolves 0 Liverpool 0

The opening minutes of the new half saw Stephen Ward having to receive treatment after a challenge with Henderson, and Hennessey had to be alert as he ran just outside his area to clear from the oncoming Carroll.

But the keeper was beaten in the 52nd minute as Carroll met an Adam cross at the far post and slid the ball home.

Worse followed nine minutes later as Bellamy was allowed to advance to the edge of the box before he hit a shot that flew into the bottom corner. Hennessey, who appeared to be unsighted, got a hand to the ball but he couldn't keep it out.

Before the game restarted, Wolves made a double switch with Stephen Hunt and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake replacing Kightly and Jonsson respectively.

The Merseysiders continued to press and after Adam had volleyed over following a Kuyt centre, Agger headed narrowly wide after Carroll had headed on a Bellamy corner.

Agger was then booked for clattering into the back of Fletcher, and Edwards also saw yellow moments later for pulling back Johnson.

Hennessey made a fine reflex save to turn over a deflected shot from Kuyt, but the keeper was beaten for the third time, in the 78th minute, when Kuyt netted with a low, close range angled shot after he had played a one-two with Adam.

Carroll very nearly grabbed a fourth with a header from another Bellamy corner then, five minutes from time, Ebanks-Blake was unlucky not to score a consolation goal with a 25-yard volley that beat Pepe Reina all the way but bounced to safety off the inside of the post.
