Cup Choker

Manchester United 3 (Bebe 56, Park 70, Hernandez 90)

Wolves 2 (Elokobi 60, Foley 76)

You wonder how many more time Wolves are going to have to endure the agony of conceding a late goal to condemn them to an undeserved defeat. But it happened again at Old Trafford where a last minute strike from Manchester United's Javier Hernandez ended any hopes of Carling Cup glory.

Mick McCarthy rang the changes and only Kevin Foley, Christophe Berra, Dave Jones and Matt Jarvis retained their places from the team that had lost out to Chelsea.

Wolves kicked-off attacking the Stretford End and in an uneventful start to the game a corner from Jones was too strong and the ball drifted behind on the far side, and Steven Mouyokolo cleared a dangerous centre from Bebe.

Wayne Hennessey had to dive to hold onto a shot from Gabriel Obertan that took a hefty deflection off Berra, and when play swept to the other end Jones just failed to control a return pass from Stephen Hunt as he ran into the box.

In the 16th minute Wes Brown fouled Hunt near the corner flag to the left of United's area. Hunt's free-kick was nodded back by Berra to Sylvan Ebanks-Blake whose header looped over the bar.

Frederico Macheda shot straight at Hennessey after taking a short pass from Bebe in the Wolves box, and then an excellent cross from Foley had United keeper Ben Amos struggling and Obertan hadto clear behind.

From Jarvis's corner Mouyokolo ran in at the near post but he directed his header a yard over the angle.

Jonny Evans fouled Steven Fletcher just outside the 'D' but Jones's free-kick bounced clear off the United wall and a clumsy challenge by Chris Smalling on Ebanks-Blake, this time to the left of the home area, resulted in a Jarvis free-kick that was punched clear by Amos.

Right on half-time Bebe fired over after taking a return pass from Obertan.

Half-Time: United 0 Wolves 0

After the restart Michael Carrick shot over the bar before Fletcher volleyed wide from a tight angle after a cross from Jarvis.

Macheda fired narrowly over the angle after taking a pass from Obertan, then a 25-yard free-kick from Gibson went past the wall but Hennessey gathered easily.

But the Welsh keeper had to be at his best to thwart Ji-Sung Park who had been played in by Gibson. Park looked a certain scorer but Hennessey made a great save with his legs.

In the 56th minute a fluke goal from Bebe gave United the lead. His cross took a deflection off George Elokobi and looped just over the line before Foley headed clear.

Jarvis was showing just why he had been linked with a possible England call up with some great runs on the wing and twice in a minute his crosses had the United defence at panic stations. From the second, a pull back, Hunt's shot was blocked by a defender.

But the equaliser Wolves deserved arrived on the hour mark as Elokobi powerfully headed in Hunt's corner.

Three minutes later Hunt clipped the top of the bar with a rising drive after yet more good work from Jarvis. As play continued to swing from end to end, Park screwed a shot wide and Macheda blazed wastefully over the bar.

Gibson went into the book for a foul on Michael Mancienne, then Fletcher shot wide after Ebanks-Blake had squared a pass to him.

Hunt had a dangerous cross headed away by Brown before United regained the lead in the 70th minute with Park netting after taking a return pass from Macheda.

Hunt delivered a centre that was half cleared to Jones who volleyed narrowly wide. But in the 76th minute it was all square again as Ebanks-Blake and Fletcher combined to set up Foley who scored with a low shot on the turn (pictured).

Ebanks-Blake was within a foot of giving his side the lead just two minutes later after he took a ball from Jarvis. The striker beat Smalling but then fired just the wrong side of the post.

Amos saved a low shot from Marcus Bent who had come on for Ebanks-Blake, and Hennessey made a terrific save from Obertan at point blank range.

But it was a United substitute that sealed Wolves fate in the 90th minute. Hernandez broke into the box, rode a tackle, and found the net even though Hennessey managed to get a hand to his shot.
